Q: My partner and I have a law firm that does immigration. We started doing this because we wanted to help people and we wanted to serve a population that normally doesn’t get representation in legal matters. We quickly learned that we couldn’t make money doing it the way we’ve been doing it. Our biggest concern has been that we’re going to lose that passion for giving back because we’re so busy chasing the money.
A: That’s a story someone told you. Who told you the story that you got to hurt people or not care about people to chase money? You’ve known that story for the longest time that it’s become almost a fixture of your reality. You have to take that piece of your reality and throw it out. You’re going to have to let go of it or at least suspend it for a ninety-day experiment. You can’t even show up and be the best version of yourself. Do your clients want you working on their case or important immigration matter while you’re distracted worrying about how you’re going to pay your mortgage? If your clients were educated consumers about legal services they would demand that you run your law firm at a profit so that you can give them the best of yourself. For ninety days just as an experiment go on a hiatus. Turn off the news; stop reading the newspaper; stop watching TV; stop listening to the news on the radio. Just go into a little hibernation for the next six months and when you pop out in six months and you’ve got a more successful law firm and a more successful life it will prove itself.
