Q: When we experiment fast cheap and out of control can you help me better understand the out of control component?
A: There’s an element of it that this is just going to be out of control. What shouldn’t be out of control is a relatively short list. Statute of limitations shouldn’t be out of control. Trust account shouldn’t be out of control. The financial controls shouldn’t be out of control. The processes, the procedures, the systems for how things get done that’s constantly going to be out of control. It’s going to be controlled chaos because the processes and the systems and the procedures you put in place for a $250,000 are not going to be appropriate for a $500,000 law firm. And if you grow your firm from 250 to 500 in ten years then you’re never really going to be out of control because you can slowly grow them. But if you go from 250 to 500 in eighteen months as soon as the ink is drying you’re tearing it up and creating new processes.
