Q: What about really bad decisions that ended up costing you time and mental energy? For example, seven months ago I lost a number of staff members through a series of coincidences. After the frustration of hiring those staff members I decided to actively not go out and replace them. It was an active decision that right now I’m not going to replace them I’m just going to do the work myself.
A: Do you think that having to eat the shit that you had to eat doing the work yourself because you made the decision not to hire someone made you smarter about hiring the person you ultimately hired? Do you think that person is a better person than you might’ve otherwise settled for if you hadn’t done the job yourself for some period of time, unpleasant, as it might have been? So was it wrong decision or the right decision to do the work yourself to learn how to get the job done to fully understand what goes into doing the job so you can be smarter about who to hire, smarter about how to supervise them and have more confidence in knowing that if they try to screw you you could do the job yourself and never be held hostage? So was it the wrong decision or the right decision? The outcome may be the outcome you had hoped for or it may not be the outcome you had hoped for, but the decision itself is a bullet. A bullet in the gun of a police officer who is protecting you from robbery is a good thing. A bullet in the gun of a robber who’s robbing you is a bad thing. But the bullet is just the bullet; the decision is just the decision.
